Bunk beds are the easiest solution for homes that are low on space but with a need to accommodate more than one child in a room. Before you buy, however, it's important to take ceiling heights into consideration.
Today standard ceilings are typically around 8’ to 9’ tall. Below 8’ is considered low and above 9’ is considered high.
The general rule of thumb is that the top bunk needs to have 33 to 36 inches of space between the mattress and your ceiling. This will give the child up top enough room to sit up comfortably without hitting their head.
Being from New York, we've worked with homes of all different shapes, sizes and ceiling heights, so we made sure we have options for everyone. So...what options are available in your home?
Best for low ceilings:
Our LoLo (pictured above) and Cabin bunk beds are perfect for lower ceilings that are slightly below average. Both these options are 64” tall, needing ceilings that are only 7’6”.
Best for standard ceilings:
The Marino Bunk (featured above) and the Dumbo Lofts, our most customizable beds, both clock in at 72” tall. For these beds we suggest ceilings of 8’3”.
Best for high ceilings:
HiHi, our new triple bunk bed sleeps three, but to achieve this we had to go even taller than our Marino or Dumbo beds. HiHi stands at 93” tall. For a comfortable clearance while in the top bunk we recommend rooms have about 10 feet tall ceilings, give or take.
Even less space? No problem.
Our miniBUNK is the tiniest we’ve got. With its tallest side standing at 58”, this bed is ideal for any home, especially those with ceilings lower than 7 feet.
