Step inside Cliff's cleverly designed room in a Brooklyn brownstone, where a custom version of our Dumbo loft bed maximizes the potential of a challenging, narrow bedroom. Spanning the 7'4" width of the room, the loft bed acts as a functional bridge, maintaining a clear walkway through the space. Leveraging the room's nearly 12-foot ceiling height, we raised the loft bed 66 inches off the ground, creating an open, usable area underneath making it tall enough for kids and parents to move around comfortably. With a total height of 85 inches, the loft bed makes the most of the rooms vertical space while preserving an open, airy feel.
The loft bed features a standard twin-size mattress with a custom ledge filler at the entrance to ensure a snug fit within the frame. The staircase we designed with a triangular second step, which allowed for the first step to face away from the wall and incorporate an additional storage drawer beneath it. For added safety, a stair rail panel provides secure support while walking up and down the stairs.
Underneath the loft bed we incorporated practical storage solutions to maximize functionality. In addition to the open shelving above the desktop and wire management shelf below the desktop, this cabinet was customized to feature two pencil drawers to keep clutter at bay. Opposite the desk, the storage cabinet features open, adjustable shelving and custom dresser drawers. On the outside of this cabinet, we attached a small display shelf, ideal for showcasing collectables.
The loft structure's walnut finish with white accents complements the rich, traditional details and finishes often found in Brooklyn brownstones while adding a touch of modernity to the space. Part of the inspiration for Cliff's layout came from his cousin Henry's room, which features the same bridged loft bed solution. Explore Henry's room tour here.
