Out on Long Island, we were asked to do a home consultation to convert an underutilized room into a combination guest bedroom and playroom by partitioning the space with custom cabinetry. The goal was to create a functional division that maintained openness while maximizing storage and play opportunities.
The standout feature of this design is the trio of circular cubbies that offer cozy reading nooks for the kids. The top and middle cubbies are filly lined with custom upholstered panels, creating soft, enclosed spaces, and the lower cubby features one plush cushion. A set of narrow open shelves double as a ladder and we added integrated handles in the design for safe climbing access to the upper cubbies.
Beyond its playful elements, the cabinetry provides ample storage with a mix of open shelving and enclosed cabinets for books, toys, and essentials. The door to the guest bedroom is disguised as a shallow bookcase cabinet, designed with plexiglass fronts to keep books neatly displayed. Inside the guest room, a built-in cabinet with three drawers and two doors offers additional storage for guests.

The finish throughout the project is birch with white accents, giving the space a clean, modern aesthetic while highlighting the natural warmth of the wood. This thoughtful design seamlessly balances privacy, functionality, and playful interaction, making it a perfect solution for a growing family.
