As Charlie and Lucy entered their pre-teen years, their shared bedroom was no longer meeting their needs. They needed more storage space, designated study areas, and a layout that gave them a sense of separation while still allowing them to share a bedroom. To create a space that worked for them long-term, their mom decided to swap rooms, giving the girls the larger master bedroom and the opportunity for furniture custom designed for their space.
Along a spacious wall in the common area of the girls’ room, we designed a custom bench with a pull-out trundle bed, creating a cozy spot to lounge, read, or host sleepovers. Flanking the bench, Modulor storage units provide a mix of open shelving for books and toys and enclosed cabinets to keep everyday essentials neatly tucked away. Above the bench, an open shelving unit offers additional display storage, keeping the area organized while maintaining an open and airy feel.
To ensure the design met the girls’ needs, we customized the desk cabinets to provide plenty of storage and functionality. Each desk features two pencil drawers below the desktop, filing cabinet style storage drawers, and open shelving to keep their books and other items neatly organized. Above the desktop, a corkboard panel adds a practical touch for pinning notes, photos, or reminders. Across from the desk cabinets, we designed storage cabinets that feature adjustable open storage cubbies and 6 dresser drawers, offering ample space for clothing and other belongings. Adding to both the safety and storage capacity of the beds, our five step staircase features deep drawers below each step and is equipped with our stair rail panel for added security.
The girls and their mother chose our white oak finish for a warm yet modern aesthetic and added painted white accents and drawer and door fronts to add contrast. The combination of natural wood tones and crisp white details keep the space feeling bright and cohesive. Every element of Charlie and Lucy’s room was designed with function, balance, and longevity in mind, ensuring that their room will continue to meet their needs as they grow.
