James’ room has been an evolving project, first starting in 2021 when his mother approached us about redesigning his room. At the time James was only 4 ½ years old so we opted for a junior sized Cabin daybed to serve as a transitional bed until he was old enough for a bunk. By late 2023, James was outgrowing his daybed so we returned for a home consultation and got to work on designing a full bedroom set that could last him through high school.
With plenty of square footage to work with, we decided to upgrade James’ bed to our Marino twin over full model. The twin sized upper bed serves as his primary sleeping area, while the full sized lower bed provides extra space for lounging, or hosting guests for sleepovers. In addition to the 5 storage drawers below each step of the staircase, we placed our trundle storage drawers below the bottom bunk to further increase the storage capacity of the bed. And for added safety, a removable stair rail panel was attached to the staircase. On the headboard side of the lower bunk, we proposed a three drawer dresser that doubles as a nightstand and can be easily accessed via the headboard cutout in the bunk bed. A hanging tray was attached to the upper bunk as a compact nightstand solution.
Across from the bunk bed, we proposed our Modulor 48 desk to provide James with a functional workspace that will carry him through his high school years. In addition to the desk’s 4 foot workspace, it’s also packed with storage to help keep James organized. Underneath the desktop are three filing cabinet style drawers, one pencil drawer, and our wire management shelf to keep messy wires contained when James starts using a computer. Above the desktop is a hutch featuring 3 doors with adjustable shelving inside to keep clutter at bay. Our ConnectMe chair, with its simple and sturdy design, pairs perfectly with the desk and ensures James has a comfortable place to work.
Lastly, we designed a custom modular storage unit that was placed across from the staircase of the bunk bed. The lower portion of this unit features four doors with adjustable shelving inside, while the upper features open shelving for books and other display items. To maintain the room’s open feel, we fabricated the furniture in our all white finish to match the wall color and left the birch edges of the plywood exposed to add contrast depth, allowing the furniture to stand out without overwhelming the space.
